Here are a few odd, experimental, and just plain fun things that can be
done with glass.
First, three cherry blossom images in glass. Second, drop out vases
which can resemble blown glass. And third, below are torso figures
utilizing slumping as well as casting techniques.
My new "Amelia" series of female torso works vary in size and technique. I
first make clay sculptures, then create fiber molds for the large slumped
pieces below. A few from this series are shown below but others resist my
poor photographic efforts and are best seen in person. I will have these at
the Artful Dimensions Gallery in Federicksburg.
This Red and Amber Amelia 17"x13"
relief is a draped glass technique
formed over a larger fiber mold I
created. Its attached to a heavy clear
and white glass base.
The followings are relief castings - generally two to three
inches thick. Initially I make clay models, then create latex
mold negatives, cast special foundary wax into them to make a
wax positive. I then encase this into a plaster block, melt out
the wax and now can cast glass into the now hollow plaster
form. While the process can be long and involved, I think the
results are worth the effort.
Red streaked Amelia is 12"x8"
tilted back slightly to rest
balanced on a frosted glass base.
This small, 6"x8" partial torso
Amelia casting resembles a
broken stone relief carving. It is
attached to a frosted clear back
and rests on a clear and streaky
blue base.
Drop-out technique is where you suspend flat glass blanks on a
raised surface with a hold in the middle so the glass can melt
down forming vases.
Two similar colored but different
shapes and heights. This one is 10
inches high by 7 inches square at the
top.
Drop Out Vases
This one is 7 inches high and
10 inches across at the top.
Togehter they make a nice set.
This is a high fire square
dropped out to form a colorful
6 inches tall by 8.5 inches
across at the top vase.
Cherry Blossom - wall hangings, all
about 12 or 14 inches by 18 or so inches.
On a cream colored background, this
piece was cut and fused into a new,
mosaic, form.
Two blue background, similar sized
and go nicely together.
